Non-count nouns do not have a plural form. They do not take an -s. To count a non-count noun, a measure word, or counter, must be used.

  • This is a piece of produce.

You must learn whether a noun is count or non-count.

  • This is a piece of fruit. ("Fruit" is a non-count noun.)
  • This is a banana. ("Banana" is a count noun.)
  • This is a vegetable. ("Vegetable" is a count noun.)
  • This is a bunch of broccoli. ("Broccoli" is a non-count noun.)

Some nouns are count nouns but do not have an -s plural form.

  • This is a fish. These are two fish.
  • This is a sheep. These are two sheep.
  • This is a deer. These are two deer.
